In an unfortunate incident, a female boxer originally from Darjeeling, Jyoti Pradhan died during her practice session in Kolkata. There can be no sadder way for sportspersons to lose their life than while playing the game they passionately love. According to sources, 20-year-old Jyoti arrived at the Bhowanipore Boxing Association for practice like any other day. While practicing, she sat on a chair and was wiping sweat with a towel. Minutes later, she collapsed and fell down from the chair. The fellow boxers took her to SSKM Hospital immediately where she was declared brought dead. Soon after, an autopsy was conducted which suggested she had no injuries on her body but her liver was extended, which indicated jaundice.
Jyoti was originally from Darjeeling and was pursuing her graduation - currently studying in the second-year. She had represented Bengal in the national-level tournaments in both Boxing and Taekwondo. Jyoti with members of her club in Kolkata. The boxing fraternity, too, expressed shock at the demise of this young boxer. “Pradhan was a very promising boxer. She had the potential to shine for India,” said WBABF secretary Swapan Banerjee. Athletes, just like every other living being, are pervious to falling prey to the fangs of death. However Jyoti left us way too early.
