The Indian Greco-Roman wrestler’s disappointing run continued on the Day 2 of the Individual Wrestling World Cup with all the remaining three Greco-Roman wrestlers in the fray bowing out of the tournament early on Sunday evening.

In an otherwise frustrating day, Gyanender was India’s only shining light as he won two bouts in the day before losing to Kristian Fris of Serbia in the quarterfinal match.

The day started on a bright note for India as Gyanender registered a 3-0 win in his qualification match over Armenia’s Armen Melikyan to enter pre-quarterfinals. The Indian maintained the momentum that he had gained from his first match in his second bout as well as he defeated Abdennour Laouni of Algeria 5-1 in a closely contested match.

Gyanender though failed to continue his winning run as he lost 9-0 on technical superiority against the local star, Kristian Fris in the quarterfinal match which brought a halt to India’s run on second day of the World Cup.

The other two wrestlers for India, Naveen and Hardeep too failed to put up anything noteworthy on the mat as both of them lost their only bout of the day.

While, Naveen went down 2-0 to Eduard Popp of Germany in the 130kg qualification round, Hardeep lost 5-1 in the 97kg pre-quarterfinal to M. Saravi of Iran.

These three losses today also means that it is the end of the road for India in the Individual Wrestling World Cup’s Greco-Roman wrestling.

But despite this torrid start in the World Cup, all is not lost for the Indians as their preferred women’s and freestyle category is yet to kick start in the tournament. Day 3 of the tournament will see four Indian women wrestlers – GursharanPreet Kaur, Sonam Malik, Pinki and Nirmala Devi fighting it out in the 72kg, 62kg, 55kg and 50kg weight category respectively.
