Indian wrestler Ravinder to fight for gold at the U-23 World Championships


India’s young wrestling sensation Ravinder made his way into the final of the U-23 World Championships in Budapest in the 61kg category on Tuesday night.

Ravinder, who is 22 years of age, beat the overwhelming favourite Arsen Harutyunyan of Armenia with a scoreline of 4-3. This victory propelled him into the final and set up the gold medal clash against Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov of Kyrgyzstan.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) wrestler is the latest to come out of Haryana, following a long list of predecessors from the states that were successful in the sport.

He started off his tournament by beating Hungarian national Marcell Budai Kovacs with a convincing scoreline of 12-1. That set up his quarterfinal bout against Russian Dinislam Takhtarov, whom he beat with a thumping scoreline of 11-0, effecting his second technical superiority win. To call it a one-sided bout would be a massive understatement.

Ravinder is guaranteed a medal but will be looking to go for gold after being denied a medal in the 2017 championships where he lost in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in the 79kg category, grappler Veer Dev Gulia secured a bronze medal match after losing to Azerbaijan’s Abubakr Abakarov, who beat Gulia with the final scorecard reading 8-1. It was a spectacular run from the grappler till this bout.

He began his campaign by beating Hungarian national Botond Lukacs with a scoreline of 3-1. He then matched up against China’s Ligan Chai and beat him 7-2 in a resounding victory. The quarterfinal bout was against Mongolia’s Batzul Damjin on Monday night. It was a supreme performance from the athlete hailing from Haryana, as he beat the Mongolian national with a demoralizing scoreline of 12-1.
