Former world champion Mirabai Chanu and Youth Olympic champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga were awarded with the Best Senior Women's Lifter and the Best Senior Men's Lifter at the National Weightlifting Championships that are being held in Kolkata.

Chanu had won the 49 kg gold earlier in the tournament whilst shattering three records, while Jeremy made a national record in the clean and jerk event en route a gold in the men's 67 kg category for Services. He ended the tournament with 658.962 'Robi Points', while Chanu ended the meet with 865.796 'Robi Points'.

'Robi Points' is the official method of calculation by the IWF to compare individual athletes' totals across each of the weight categories.

Earlier this week, Chanu had broken her national record after lifting a total of 203 kg. Her previous best had been a lift of 201 kg that she had lifted at the World Championships in Thailand in 2019. She lifted 88 kgs in the snatch event in Kolkata and managed a lift of 115 kg in clean and jerk.

She is now in fourth place in the world rankings, behind China's Jiang Huihua (212kg) and Hou Zhihui (211kg) and Korea's Ri Song Gum (209kg).

Jeremy had also bettered his clean and jerk record to clinch the gold medal in his weight division. The teenager from Mizoram, who had become the first Indian to win a gold at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 at Argentina, lifted 132 kg earlier this week after two failed attempts. However, he saved his best for the last lift as he managed 167 kg in clean and jerk to total 299 kg. His personal best, however, is 306 kg that he had recorded at the International Qatar Cup.

The Nationals served as the ideal testing platform for Chanu and the other weightlifters to gain some form ahead of the Olympic gold event Asian Championships that will be held in April at Nur-Sultan.
