Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga, a Youth Olympics gold medalist, has claimed three world records en route his silver-medal winning efforts in the 67kg weight category at the Qatar International Cup. In the sixth edition of the tournament, the Indian smashed his own Youth World and Youth Asian record in the snatch, clean and jerk and total lift to end with a total effort of 306kgs.

Jeremy broke 27 records that were under his name, including at the international and the national level. He broke 12 international records including three world youth, three Asian youth and six Commonwealth records. He also broke five national youth records along with five junior national and five senior national records.

The 17-year-old weightlifter from Mizoram is in the form of his life, and had started the year by winning silver medal in the EGAT Trophy, where he lifted 131kg in the snatch event and 157kg in the clean and jerk category. He followed it up with fine performances in the Asian Championships, where he smashed the Youth World and the Asian record as he managed an effort of 297kg, with 134kg in the snatch event and 163kg in the clean and jerk.

He also won the Asian Youth Championship this year besides winning a silver in the Asian Junior Championship. He, however, returned empty handed from the World Championship, as he finished tenth with a lift of 296kg in Group B.

Jeremey, who switched to the 67kg weight division from 62kgs, still has a long way to go, however, as the world record in his event stands at 155kg in snatch, 185kg in clean and jerk and 339kg in total.

Earlier, Rakhi Halder too created two national records during her bronze-medal winning effort in the tournament. Participating in the 64kg weight category, the Bengal weightlifter managed a personal best of 218kg, up from the 214kg that she had managed in the Commonwealth Championships in June this year.
