The Asian Indoor Athletics Championship came to a close on Saturday in the Iranian capital city, Tehran. The eighth edition of the three-day event saw the participation of over 300 athletes from 22 countries. India's 13-member contingent returns from the tournament with three medals under its belt. On the first day of the event, Sheena Nellckal Varkey bagged a silver medal in women's triple jump. She cleared 13.37m, behind Kazakhstan's Lrina Ektova (13.79m) and ahead of Thi Thu Thao Bui (13.22) of Vietnam. India's medal earners on the second day were Tejinder Pal Singh and Elakiya Dasan. Singh bagged a silver in shot put event where he ran a distance of 19.18 m. Samari Ali of Iran won the gold by garnering a distance of 19.42m under his belt. Image result for elakiya dasan
Dasan won the bronze medal in the men's 60m sprint event as he clocked 6.67s, which is a national record. Sameer Mon held the previous national record in this event when he completed the sprint in 6.87s back in 2009. But Dasan narrowly missed the qualification standard of Indoor Worlds (6.63s) which is scheduled from March 1-4 in Birmingham. Other two Indians ' Dutee Chand (60m) and Sanjivani Jadhav (3000m) ' did not start their races. Dutee did not travel to Tehran due to a wrist injury suffered during her training in Hyderabad. Jadhav, on the other hand, did not get her visa on time. The host nation fielded 39 members in the tournament. They finished their campaign with four golds. Sepideh Tavakoli clinched a gold medal in the women's Long Jump Pentathlon. Hossein Keyhani in the men's 3,000 meters, Hassan Taftian in the men's 60 meters and Ali Samari in the men's shot put had already won three gold medals for Iran. China's Liang Xiaojing won women's 60 metres gold in the event. Liang achieved a time of 7.20sec in the final to win gold, with Kazakhstan's Vviktoriya Zyabkina securing silver in 7.39. There was also success for Kazakhstan, as Anastasiya Yermakova won the women's pole vault competition. Her team-mates Svetlana Golendova and Aigerim Shynazbekova also triumphed in the women's 400m and 60m hurdles, respectively.
