The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) seems to be going through its own set of issues when it comes to organising national tournaments which, according to them, have seen several high profile names pull out. The latest victim tournament following that trend has been the the 11Sports National Ranking (East Zone) Table Tennis Championships, beginning at the R.G. Barua Sports Complex’s Indoor Stadium in Guwhati later today. But names like Manika Batra, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Achanta Sharath Kamal will not be attending. It is also important to mention that today is the day that the National Sports Awardees are set to be felicitated at the Rashtrapati Bhavan later.
“We want our players to compete in all domestic events. But when that doesn’t happen, we are obviously worried. We can understand a player not participating because of injury or circumstances that are really unavoidable. We are into framing new policies that we hope should arrest the irregularities,” MP Singh, Secretary General of TTFI was quoted as saying in a TTFI press release.

Sans Manika, Sathiyan and Sharath, the competition seems to have been thrown wide open with Suthirtha Mukherjee, (South Zone winner), Pooja Sahasrabudhe (Central Zone winner) and Divya Deshpande (Institutional champion) in the mix. Former national champions and internationally acclaimed paddlers including Madhurika Patkar and Mouma Das will also be participating. The principle point by TTFI is that it messes up the National Ranking system if players regularly pull out of these domestic tournaments. The solution to this will be the drafting of new selection policies which will help curb this trend of non participation. "TTFI’s announcement of 10 percent hike in prize money has gone down well with the players as they would now receive Rs. 7.47 lakh, a decent incentive for the players to get motivated and give their best shot at titles," the release said.
