Sarita, a 26-year old national level taekwondo player, was shot dead in Gurugram by her stalker Sombir, who had been harassing her from the last year after she repeatedly ignored his marriage proposals. Last week, he barged into her house in Bhoda Khurd and asked Sarita to marry him at gunpoint. After she refused his proposal yet again, in a fit of rage, he shot Sarita.

“We were having bed tea around 4 am when he (Sombir) forcibly entered the house, carrying a gun. He said he was asking for the last time if she would marry him. Thinking it was his usual threat, my daughter refused and he shot her and fled,” the victim’s mother Savitri told The Tribune.

According to Savitri, the promising taekwondo player had filed a number of complaints against the stalker last year but the police failed to take her seriously. The national-level player had complained to the police in June and then in August but Sombir, a Jhajjar resident, was not arrested. Despite Sarita following up with the police, they failed to see the danger in her complaints. Sarita's family even sought security for her, but the request was not considered.

Sarita's elder sister, talking to media persons, said, "She was under constant threat from him and even took up jobs in other cities like Jaipur and Shimla to escape him. But he traced her and harassed her there also. My father fell grievously ill and that brought Sarita back to Gurugram and her life became hell. She somehow knew that this ordeal would have a tragic end and thus came back to bear it rather than putting the family in danger. She had even filed a complaint with the Jaipur police."

“He would come home and create a ruckus and say he was not interested in marrying but clipping off the wings of my sister. He used to say, ‘Maine iski supaari li hai’ and sought money from my father but we could not pay him. My mother and sister confined themselves to the house’s first floor and kept the ground floor locked. But he broke open the latches,” added Sarita’s sister.

Sarita's mother has filed a complaint against Sombir under Section 302 (murder), 449 (trespass to commit murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation) in Bilaspur. The police are on the hunt for Sombir, who has gone untraceable after the incident.

The DCP of Bilaspur, Manesar, failed to comment on the lack of action by the police, despite repeated complaints by the taekwondo player.
