Indian wrestling’s most-talked-about weight category is the 74-kg category largely due to the overwhelming presence of iconic grappler Sushil Kumar. The World Championship trials for the 74-kg category were put off by a few weeks (from July last week) owing to the nagging injuries sustained by some of our grapplers, who are slated to compete with Sushil in the 74-kg category. Parveen Rana is grappling with a shoulder injury and has been out of competitive action for a while, while Jitender Kinha is back to full fitness after recuperating from a back injury. Amit Dhankar is the third wrestler in the fray to compete in the 74-kg category. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had postponed the World Championship trials for the 74-kg category in order to pave the way for the likes of Parveen Rana and Jitender Kinha to get back to full fitness so that the trials can have an element of competitiveness. It may be noted that both Parveen Rana and Amit Dhankar have been in fine fettle this year – in fact, Parveen had bagged a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championship in Xian, China but interestingly he had competed in the 79-kg category and not in the 74-kg category. The 74-kg category is famous for the overwhelming presence of iconic grappler Sushil Kumar.
The 74-kg category is famous for the overwhelming presence of iconic grappler Sushil Kumar. Amit Dhankar had a confidence boost, scooping up a silver medal in the 74-kg category at the 2019 Asian Championship in the absence of Sushil Kumar. Sushil on his part, bowed out in the early stages of the recently-concluded Medved Tourney losing tamely to world number five and reigning Asian champion Bekzod Abdurakhmonov in Minsk, Belarus - his first tournament in a year since last featuring at the 2018 Asian Games where he was shown the tournament exit door quite early. “We will conduct the World Championship trials for the 74-kg category as well as the four non-Olympic weights either coming Saturday or Sunday. We cannot afford to postpone these trials any further as August 19 is the cut-off date to send our entries for the 2019 World Wrestling Championship that will be held at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan from September 14-22,”
said Vinod Tomar, Assistant Secretary, Wrestling Federation of India. There is talk that Parveen Rana would give the 74-kg category trials a miss owing to a shoulder injury, but the senior WFI official stopped short of confirming the same. ‘As far as we are concerned, four grapplers – Sushil Kumar, Amit Dhankar, Parveen Rana and Jitender Kinha are competing in the 74-kg category trials. If any grappler has injury concerns forcing them to miss the trials, we will only know in due course of time. The postponement of the trials was to allow Parveen Rana and Jitender Kinha to recover from their injuries and we can’t delay these trials with the cut-off date approaching. Amit Dhankar featured in the World Championship thrice in the 2014 (65-kg), 2016 (70-kg) and 2017 (70-kg) editions and each time lost in the first round. Rana featured in the 2017 World Championship in Paris, where he lost in the second round, while Jitender Kinha made his World Championship debut in the 2018 edition in Budapest where he lost in the first round. Interestingly, Sushil Kumar has skipped the World Championship on a number of occasions – he last featured in the big-ticket event in 2011 where he lost in the second round of the 66-kg category after having won the 66-kg gold in the 2010 edition in Moscow. The absence of Sushil meant that different grapplers represented in the 74-kg category at the World Championship – Narsingh Yadav bagged a coveted 74-kg bronze at the 2015 World Championship after reaching the second round in the 74-kg category of the 2013 edition, while the 74-kg category at the 2014 World Championship was represented by Balraj. Earlier, Ravi Dahiya (57-kg), Bajrang Punia (65-kg), Deepak Punia (86-kg), Mausam Khatri (97-kg) and Sumit Malik (125-kg) had sealed their freestyle wrestling berths for the World Wrestling Championship – all these five weight categories are essentially Olympic weight categories.
