A stand to have a choice regarding a Hijab by Indian Chess player

We stand with Soumya Swaminathan. No woman should be forced to wear a Hijab.

Sports and Politics have had an irrevocable bond for a very long time. From the fist of power at the Olympics held in Hitler’s Nazi Germany or Heena Sidhu’s refusal to wear a hijab to participate in a tournament.

Soumya Swaminathan, like many others before her, has taken a stand. It is important to understand the subjectivity when it comes to a piece of clothing like the Hijab. In 2016, Ibtihaj Muhammad wore the hijab to the Rio Olympics when she represented the US of A in Fencing. For her, it was empowering. The reason being that she was not forced to put it on.

For Soumya Swaminathan to take a stand against the regressive patriarchy that considers itself in a position to dictate the attire of a woman is indeed commendable. Hopefully, she has set a precedent for people to follow.
