After the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) removed shooting from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, Britain has requested hosting a separate tournament for the sport. The move comes after India protested the exclusion of the shooting event and threatened to boycott the CWG over the issue. In a bid to silence the Indian authorities, British sports minister Nigel Adams was looking at some common ground between the British Shooting and the CGF.

Replying to a letter that India's sports minister Kiren Rijiju had sent Adams over the exclusion of shooting, Nicky Morgan, the secretary of digital, sports, media and culture in Britain, replied, "While the decision to exclude shooting rests with the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee and the CGF, the government understands the strength of feeling in the matter."

The letter, which was published in Times of India, added that Adams had "asked the CGF and the British Shooting to consider the options of hosting a separate Commonwealth shooting event in the UK in 2022." Morgan, thus, hoped that this would allow the Indian shooters to compete in the UK in 2022.

He further stated that since shooting was not a core sport under the CGF constitution, it was not included in the bid that was held in 2017. "The review was fair and transparent and was conducted as an open tender review process. Key criteria were set, written submissions were made to the assessment panel, which consisted of representatives from Birmingham 2022 OC, DCMS, Birmingham City Council and Commonwealth Games England by representatives of each sport."
