The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has threatened to take over the Rowing Federation of India (RFI) after they subjected to their voting pattern and for not following the sports code. In the last RFI elections, three councillors per member had been allowed to cast votes instead of the permissible two, while proxy voting too had been allowed.

In a letter that was sent by the Secretary General of the IOA Rajeev Mehta to the RFI, he mentioned that the federation need not conduct new elections as the IOA is planning to form a new ad-hoc committee to look after its affairs. This comes after the sports ministry had agreed to the RFI for a meeting on February 10 to talk about the new constitutional amendments and the new election dates.

“This is an order from the ministry. The letter said after January 31, the last date of its recognition, the IOA can form an ad-hoc committee. Let them (ministry and RFI) have a meeting. That is not an issue," Mehta told The New Indian Express.

However, the sports ministry has not officially de-recognised the RFI, and has maintained that if the points of 2011 National Sports Developments Code of India are carried out in their next elections, scheduled for February 22, their recognition will continue. RFI President Rajlaxmi Singh Deo will be meeting the sports ministry this week, and assuring them of elections according to the sports code.

“The president has assured full compliance and I am sure they will fulfil all criteria as desired by the ministry,” said Sports secretary RS Julaniya. “The president called and requested for a meeting and I have given her time on February 10.” The secretary also said that the discussion will be on other sporting matters as well. “Besides discussing issues pertaining to sports code, we will discuss the development of rowing in the country. We will also discuss training and preparation for 2024 and 2028 Olympics.”
