PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal progress as HS Prannoy suffers a shock defeat
The Indian contingent on the third day of the Badminton World Championships 2018 endured mixed results as P.V Sindhu worked her angles to precision and comprehensively decimated Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani 21-14, 21-9 to move to the quarterfinals of the competition while HS Prannoy suffered a shock defeat in round two. Saina Nehwal, lucky to get a ‘bye’ into the second round breezed through with a convincing 21-17, 21-8 victory and will face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the quarterfinals. In the men’s category, Kidambi Srikanth overcame a slight stumble to recover from a loss in the second set and pocket the match 21-15, 12-21, 21-14 against Spain’s Pablo Abian while B. Sai Praneeth coasted to the third round with a dominating 21-18, 21-11 over Spanish counterpart, Luis Enrique Penalver. However, all was not rosy as HS Prannoy, fresh from his bronze-medal winning effort from the 2018 Asian Championships suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Brazil’s Ygor Coelho who made up for a first set loss with two straight wins in two sets as he claimed the match 8-21, 21-16, 21-15 and with that sealed a premature end to Prannoy’s campaign. 
Similar was the fate of Sameer Verma, who fell to a Lin Dan sized threat as he succumbed 21-13,21-10 to the ninth seed. In the women’s doubles category, the duo of Ashwini Ponnappa/N.Sikki Reddy failed to overcome a stiff challenge from the second-seeded duo of Japan’s Yuki Fukushima/Sayaka Hirota to lose 21-14, 21-15 in straight sets while in the mixed doubles category, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Ashwini Ponnappa lost 10-21, 21-17, 21-18 to Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss/Isabel Herttrich. In the men’s doubles category, it was a double blow for India as the teams comprising of Manu Attri/Sumeeth.B.Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty crashed out of the tournament as well. However, there still exists more than just a little hope for India as the big-ticket players in the form of PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and Kidambi Srikanth can be expected to go all the way with their recent run of form.
