One of the most successful Indian table tennis players, Poulomi Ghatak, quietly bid adieu to her playing career on Tuesday. A seven-time national champion, Ghatak was the most prominent name in women’s table tennis in the last couple of decades. 'We don't play cricket. We play table tennis. That's the difference,' she says as she retires as an eminent successful Table Tennis player of the Indian team.

Poulomi didn't make a comeback after the 2017 Nationals where she finished as runner-up. In the last couple of years, she has been busy with her role as a mother, looking after her son.

In an interview with Ei Samay, a Bengali daily, she said, "I won't be back as a player anymore, but a coach. I intend to start my coaching career pretty soon."

The Kolkata born athlete won both the senior national and junior national championships in 1998. She has represented India at the Commonwealth Games at Melbourne in 2006 and the Commonwealth Championships between 2000 and 2008. She made her debut Olympic appearance at the Sydney Olympics when she was just 16.

Poulomi has now joined forces with her husband, former national champion Soumyadip Roy, to turn their academy into a centre of excellence which was inaugurated in June last year.
