CBSE to celebrate Fitness Week in 22000 schools as part of “Fit India Movement”

At least 22,000 CBSE schools will celebrate Fitness Week in the second and third week of November after the academic board made sports a part of the system last month. Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter and shared the schedule that the schools will follow as a part of the celebrations.

On the occasion of Sports Day on August 29 this year, the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi, had launched the “Fit India Movement” that aimed to encourage the youngsters and students to include sports and physical activity in their daily routine. Taking the mission forward, CBSE has decided to devote six working days in all its schools as they aim to take students off screens and into the fields.

Day 1 of the Fitness Week will see the day begin with yoga exercises and various activities of fitness and nutrition, while day two will have free hand exercises and mental fitness activities like debates and lectures. Physical activities like dance, aerobics, gardening, martial arts have also been planned for the week, with students even being encouraged to take part in poem writing competitions on the theme of “Fit India School”.

The Week will end with a competition for staff, parents and students in traditional games to celebrate unity in diversity of India. Earlier, sports were included as a part of the CBSE curriculum with Rijiju saying that the focus is on making India a sporting powerhouse.

“Sports is the central part of the education system now. There is a major shift we are taking forward. Prime Minister is very clear in that. The Modi government is treating sports as the greatest priority ever and that is how India will become a sporting powerhouse in future,” he had said.
