Traditionally, the Indian advertising world has been dominated by Bollywood biggies and cricketing icons. And even now, top stars from the Hindi film industry and sports world rule screen-time vis-à-vis ad films. But these days, it’s interesting to see a number of ‘fresh, non-regular’ brand ambassadors featuring in various ad campaigns.

For starters, champion Paralympian Deepa Malik is promoting an edtech startup Whitehat Jr. But let's try to find out who she is:

Deepa Malik is an Indian Athlete who has represented our country across globe. She became the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games when she won a Silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in shot put. Besides this, She has also won gold in F-53/54 Javelin event at the para athletic grand Prix held in Dubai in 2018.

Deepa has been honored with the Arjuna award in 2012, at the age of 42 years. She has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in the year 2017. Malik was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna on August 29 last year and as a result, she became the first Indian woman para-athlete to be conferred with the accolade.

Records

In 2018, She created a New Asian Record in Asian Para Games and is the only Indian woman to win medals in 3 consecutive Asian Para Games (2010, 2014, 2018). She is the first Indian women with 58 nationals and 23 international medals which really makes our nation feel proud of her brilliance. From National and State level she has won 51 Gold , 5 silvers and 2 Bronze medals.

However, the sportsperson will never die in her, she said that she might make a comeback around 2022 Asian Games if the country needs her. She had a sports journey of 15 years, it is time for her to now look beyond on her medals and try to shape up young talent. She feels proud of herself as she has decided to give back to the sport and added that it is important to follow the rules and guidelines that have been put in place.

This year, Malik decided to quit playing only to help her hold the post as the President of the Paralympic Committee of India and help budding athletes to reach at the best level possible. According to her, it seemed important for her to announce retirement as it will set a good example of following rules and regulations.
