College of your dreams: IIM A takes a dig at three other IIMs during sports fest

In the sports meet organised by IIM, the punchlines and in-your-face cheekiness were taken to a whole new level during the three-day January event.

Heads up if you thought the days of harmless concocting of witty lines at the expense of your rival school during the fest season is over because even the best B-schools in the country are indulging in the same. In the annual four-way sports meet organized by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) called Sangharsh, the punchlines and in-your-face cheekiness were taken to a whole new level during the three-day January event.

For one moment if you thought B-schools were all about work and there wasn’t any fun element in it, you might need to rethink again. Sangharsh 2020 set a prime example when IIM Ahmedabad hosted fellow IIM Bangalore, Calcutta and Lucknow over at the Gujarat city. Desiring to deliver a subtle yet ‘warm’ welcome to the students of the other B-Schools, IIM Ahmedabad had a banner hung which congratulated them for having finally made it to arguably the best B-School in the country.

The tongue-in-cheek banner created quite the ripples among the rival colleges with Twitter and LinkedIn becoming the platforms of discussion and argument over this ‘savage’ welcome banner. The fest culture comes hand in hand with such a form of harmless sledging and Sangharsh was no exception. Begun in 2007, the sports meet has grown from strength to strength with the hosts shuffling with every new edition.

In Sangharsh 2020, the contingent from IIM Bangalore aimed for a gold rush and came out on top of almost all the events over the three-day inter-collegiate sporting extravaganza. IIM Bangalore had the last laugh in Women’s Tables Tennis, Men’s Badminton, Men’s Volleyball, Men’s Cricket, Women’s Basketball, Tennis, among other multiple events. IIM Calcutta and IIM Lucknow along with IIM Ahmedabad also gave stiff competition where ever possible, but it was mostly dominated by the B-School students of IIM Bangalore.

The banner was a talking point on all the days of the fest as it was not just cheeky but also quirky in its element. IIM Ahmedabad has found a place for itself in popular fiction, especially in Chetan Bhagat’s book ‘2 States’ where the campus life of the same is discussed. Entering the hall of fame even more grandly ever since its aggrandization in the pages of fiction, IIM Ahmedabad had acquired a cult status among the B-School’s of our nation, which was the root context behind the clever banner!
