The age-old education system of India is currently being revamped with new additions every now and then to ensure the balanced growth of the child. Kiren Rijiju, the current Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs mentioned that the government is in plans of introducing a curriculum where Sports is included as an integral part of the syllabi so that the child's overall achievements can be measured.

Rijiju told to the PTI in an interview after inaugurating the Dr N P V Ramaswamy Udayar Hockey Centre at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and University in Chennai:

Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has already announced setting up a Board for Sports Education. Now, under the new education policy, sports will become a part of education and the CBSE is preparing a system to ensure sports becomes a substantial part of education.

Sports has long since been considered as an extra-curricular activity in most schools without due importance being meted out to it. For this reason, particularly, there has always been a long-standing tussle between sports and academics, with children often having to choose between them. Desiring to resolve this issue, the CBSE plans to incorporate sports into the main curriculum of studies.

“Earlier, sports was treated as extra-curricular activities. Sports was not part of education system and it was treated as an extra,” Rijiju told the PTI and further explained the government's efforts to bring it into the main fray.

Devoid of being treated as an 'extra' or an 'option', Sports is being welcomed into the proper frame of the educational system. “Sports is the central part of education system now. There is a major shift we are taking forward. Prime Minister is very clear in that,” Rijiju conveyed to the PTI.

Speaking in praise of the Modi government, Kiren Rijiju was highly pleased with the decision taken to include sports in the CBSE curriculum. The plans to redesign it is currently being poured over. “I have already attended the cabinet meeting and I have already spoken there. Now, it is under preparation (to include sports in educations system). Policy has been accepted. How to implement, when to start, this will depend on the preparation," Rijiju said. "Modi government is treating sports as greatest priority ever and that is how India will become a sporting powerhouse in future,” Rijiju informed optimistically ahead of the 2020 Olympics.

With the Olympics as the main focus of the country as it looms just 10 months away now, Kiren Rijiju is happy with the preparations being taken. To ensure better performance in the future at the Olympics, this step of including Sports is crucial in the curriculum as newer talents can be discovered and nurtured at the bud.
