After the recent General Body meeting by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), whose name was recently changed to Sports India, which brought forth some surprising suggestions from the Sports Minister himself, the Director General of SAI now says that a review system is being put in place for foreign coaches which will be conducted after the Asian Games. Describing the process as "thorough", Kapur also added that the Asian Games performances of the teams will have a bearing on the report card for coaches. , the foreign coaches associated with athletics are under the scanner. Here, it is important to remember that if the Commonwealth Games are anything to go by, some historic performances from the likes of Hima Das, Neeraj Chopra and Muhammad Anas at the Gold Coast event, the Athletics contingent has been doing relatively well in recent times. Even the Asian Games prospects seem bright is the National Inter State Athletics Championships are any proof to go by. “After Commonwealth Games we had put some coaches on notice. As of now, we have not thrown out any foreign coach but we have told some of them that we are watching you,"
Neelam Kapur was quoted as saying. “If we are spending a lot of money on foreign coaches, they are accountable to us and they have to give results. If a federation says a coach is doing good, we will go by it. But we will have a thorough review and non-performing foreign coaches will have to go," she continued. However, this review is not limited to coaches alone. As per her statements, the athletes who are on the list of beneficiaries under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) are also set to face similar scrutiny. Performance is paramount and failure to meet the standards will result in some kind of action being taken against them. “We will have an entire restructuring of the TOP Scheme. First, we will have a complete review of the beneficiaries after the Asian Games. Many of them are there in the list in view of the Asian Games,” she was further quoted as saying.
