There will not be a repeat of 2010 for Vikas Krishan, as he has withdrawn from the Boxing competition at the 18th Asian Games. Krishan, who has previously won the Gold medal Eight years ago in Guangzhou, will end this year's tournament with a Bronze medal. The 26-year-old Boxer has been one of India's most consistent performers at the Asian Games, over the years. As previously mentioned, he won his first Asiad medal eight years ago in Guangzhou. He then added another Asiad Bronze to his tally four years ago in Incheon. Vikas Krishan's run in this year's competition, however, is over. The Indian boxer suffered heartbreak as an eye injury ruled him out of the Asian Games.
The 2010 Gold medalist suffered the injury in his Quarterfinal bout against China's Erbieke Tanglatihan. Although the Indian did win the fight on a Split Decision, the nasty cut he suffered during the match, swelled up and blocked his vision completely. There were still hopes that Krishan will recover in time for the Semifinal on Friday. However, it seems that that won't be the case, with the Indian now ruled out of the competition entirely. As a result, his opponent, Abilkhan Amankul gets a walkover to the final. Overall, the Indian boxers haven't enjoyed a successful campaign in the Asian Games this time around. Almost all of them were eliminated in the early stages and returned home empty-handed. Krishan's injury means that there is only one Indian boxer left in medal contention- Amit Phangal. Regardless of the result of Phangal's remaining bout/bouts, BFI will look to go back to the drawing board and implement a strategy which sees India perform better at the next big event- The Olympics.
