14-year-old Nihal Sarin has continued India's excellent run in chess, by becoming the country's fifty-third Grandmaster. The youngster completed his third Grandmaster norm at the Abu Dhabi Masters on Tuesday, August 14, to get the title of India's fifty-third GM. Luckily for India, chess has been one of the more successful sports in the last two decades or so. As a result of many brilliant individual performers, the status of the country as a chess superpower has suddenly risen. Over fifty Grandmasters have solidified this claim as well. The first-ever Indian to achieve the title of Grandmaster was perhaps the most-well known chess player in the country-
Vishwanathan Anand
. Anand won the title in 1988 and started a trend followed by fifty-two others. There have been other remarkable Grandmasters as well, for example, Koneru Humpy. Humpy's achievement in 2002 was a milestone in itself, as she became India's first woman Grandmaster. R Praggnanandhaa became India's fifty-second Grandmaster, recently. His achievement was also magnified by the fact that he became the youngest Indian to do so, the second youngest in the entire world of all time. Following up with Praggnanandhaa's achievement is yet another Indian youngster, who becomes the fifty-third Grandmaster for the country.
14-year-old Nihal Sarin did so during the Abu Dhabi Masters when he captured 5.5 points in nine matches.
The youngster got his first GM norm at the TV2 Fagernes and his second at the Reykjavik Open. Sarin finished with a score of 6.0/9 in both the tournaments to prepare for his third GM norm. Sarin closed in on the title when he drew with Romanian GM Constantin Lupulescu in the seventh round of the tournament. As reported by PTI, the youngster needed just one point out of the last two to become India's fifty-third GM, something he achieved with ease later on. The 14-year-old Kerala boy is to become the third Grandmaster from his state after G N Gopal and S L Narayanan.
