Recently, at the Indian Super League final between Bengaluru FC and FC Goa in Mumbai, the television presenter called Nita Ambani, the wife of businessman Mukesh Ambani, "the first lady of Indian football." And that is because to the naked eye, Nita Ambani and Reliance have contributed massively to the Indian Super League which might well be the only league in the country from next season onwards. Now, her husband Mukesh Ambani, the 13th richest person in the world is also the richest sports team owner according to Forbes’ The World’s Richest Sports Team Owners 2019 list. In 2019 alone, his fortune reportedly increased from $40.1 billion in 2018 to $50 billion and that resulted in him climbing six spots, from 19th to 13th on the Forbes World’s Billionaire list. In addition to Reliance Foundation working on developing football in the rural parts of India, Nita Ambani, his wife, is also the Founder and Chairperson of Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) which, according to her website, "tremendously improved the feeble condition of sports in India at the grassroots level. Not only has ISL been a grand success, but this shift shows that it has also revolutionized the sport in India." "The top 20 owners in the list of richest sports team owners comprise of 13 rising fortunes, two static and five decliners," says a report in GQ. Mukesh Ambani is followed by Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO and owner of Los Angeles Clippers team. Third on the list is Dietrich Mateschitz, founder of Red Bull (Red Bull Racing, Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda and MLS club New York Red Bulls.) Fourth and fifth on the list are Hasso Plattner & family, (San Jose Sharks) and Roman Abramovich, (owner of Chelsea FC with a net worth of $12.40 billion) respectively. Ambani, who owns 52% shares in Reliance industries bought Mumbai Indians in 2008 for over $100 million. Back then, the franchise was among the most expensive cricket teams to be sold in the league. They have won the IPL title thrice.
