Om Prakash Bakoria, Commissioner of Sports and Youth Services, Maharashtra, has said in a statement that the state has launched a plan to increase the participation of women in sports. More than 1.1 crore girls in Maharashtra, between ages 6-13 will be educated on nutrition and exercise.

Sports teachers from across the state will undergo training, to be able to further train the children.

Rishikesh Kumar, founder and CEO, Xtraliving, which is the knowledge partner of this campaign, added that the purpose is to achieve better fitness levels and increase medal count at the international level. “We will contribute to the area of planning and execution. Our expertise is in nutrition and fitness training,” Kumar said as per the Indian Express.

The news agency also reports that Kumar said the government will collaborate with the right organisations for spreading awareness on various aspects such as health, hygiene, nutrition and fitness. This will be a great initiative in promoting a sports culture in India, which is evidently lacking at the moment.

A day ago, Hyderabad civic body had announced an avert in their fee hike for using sporting areas which are under their legislation, to help parents who cannot afford to have their children use such facilities.

With Indian sports slowly but definitely booming in several disciples, and with the women bringing equal laurels as their male counterpart, this is the right time to increase the participation of girls in sports.
