Leander Paes regains spot in Davis Cup tie; eyes history
Leader Paes and India at the Davis Cup are two things that have gone hand in hand for decades now. However, the rocky history that the veteran tennis star shares with Davis Cup captain Mahesh Bhupathi, has often gotten in the way of professional attitude in the past. Hence, even though it is not a surprise to see Leander's name in the squad, it was not something that was taken for granted. Leander has previously accused Bhupathi of not being able to keep their personal feuds at home when making team selections in previous instances. However, in India's upcoming Davis Cup tie against China, Leander Paes is back in the squad. What's more, he is within earshot distance of creating yet another world record. Should Leander bag a victory against China in Tianjin, he will have created a world record of a 43rd Davis Cup doubles victory, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli of Italy. 
2018 is only three months old but Leander has been in the news a number of times. He is almost 100 finals old himself with the recently concluded Dubai Open being his 97th final. Moreover, his recent run has brought him back into the top 50, as he is now perched at number 46, only two spots away from Divij Sharan. With Paes's experience, it is unlikely that India should falter against China, especially with the rest of the squad being in ship shape. Divij Sharan is currently placed at no.44 in the latest ATP doubles rankings while Rohan Bopanna has been the most consistent performer in the last year and a half. Also read: Indian Tennis in the rising In singles, Yuki Bhambri seems to be in good shape, especially with one of the biggest victories in his career taking place at the Indian Wells, against Nicolas Mahut.He also reached the 101st spot, earlier this month although he slipped to 105 this week. Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal, the other two names that will carry forward the singles campaign also are on an upward curve. Ramanathan reached an all-time high career ranking of 133 in February. On the other hand, Sumit Nagal is one of India's brightest hopes amongst youngsters. With the not very private drama that is shared by Paes and the likes of Bopanna and Bhupathi, it will be interesting to see how far the Indian squad keep their squabbles off the court and put the welfare of their profession and country first.
