Pro Wrestling League 2018: UP Dangals defeat Punjab Royals in epic clash

It was a phenomenal win for UP Dangals as former national champion Nitin Kumar pushed them through narrow a 4-3 win against NCR Punjab Royals in the Pro Wrestling League on Thursday Night.

Punjab’s Utkarsh Kale, the reigning champion, has kicked off their campaign in style by beating Nitin by 2-0 in the opening period. However, Utkarsha failed to address Nitin’s counter-attack and lost the crucial bout. Nitin beat Utkarsh Kale 8-7 in the decider after two teams were locked 3-3 after six matches.

In women’s 76 kg category Punjab’s Koumba Selene Fanta Larroque of France kept her side alive when Punjab was 2-3 down. She showed persistence winning 4-0 against Zsanett Nemeth of Hungary.

Dangal won the toss and showed signs of victory from the beginning itself by stopping European championships gold medalist Bekbulatov Ilyas of Russia from competing. While Punjab blocked World Champion Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus from performing.

In women’s 50 kg category Dangal captain Vinesh Phogat took the charge from 2-1. Vinesh registered a victorious 16-0 win against Nirmala Devi with much technical superiority.

In 92 kg Punjab was unlucky as Mausam Khatri, the national championship and gold medalist got injured and retired midway. She conceded her bout against Vicky despite leading 4-2.

Next bout was a comeback for Punjab and lifted their spirits as Latvia’s Grigorjeva Anastasija beat Dangal’s Geeta Phogat in 62 kg women’s competition. Grigorjeva had taken an aggressive lead in the bout from the start with a 10-2 lead. Geeta’s attack after a breather went in vain to lift her up in points as Grigorjeva was way ahead in lead.

In an opening bout of the day, 2017 Asian Championship Gold medalist Abdurakhmonov Bekzod of Uzbekistan set the platform for UP Dangals by defeating Jitender 9-0 by pinball in 74 kg category.
