India's Yuki Bhambri's scintillating North American hard court run comes to a halt as he falls to World No. 11 Jack Sock 3-6 6(3)-7 in the second round of the Miami Masters. The Junior Australian Open champ made sure he fought tooth and nail towards the end of the showdown that lasted for an hour and 33 minutes. But the American proved his mettle and stamped authority with a win over the in-form Yuki Bhambri in straight sets. In what was a third career meeting between the pair, the Indian had beaten Sock twice. First in 2009 US Open third round and at the Kaoshuing Challenger in 2013. In their second round match at Key Biscayne last night, the Indian won 56% of his first serve points. The 68% of the second serve points was won by the American as compared to 46% by the Indian helped Sock to grab the match from Bhambri.
Yuki Bhambri
got off to a slow start in the first set. Getting broken four times on serve by Sock, the American was quick to bag the opening set 6-3. The second set was when the Delhi star gave a brave fight before succumbing to the 8th seed in a tiebreak. Bhambri broke Sock twice as he served for the match at 5-4 & 6-5 before conceding the match. The Indian managed to convert 3 out of the 6 chances he had to break Sock's serve. He double faulted thrice as against the American who did 5 times in the match. But Sock served brilliant by thundering down 5 aces as against the 2 from Bhambri. Winning 55 % of the total points, Jack Sock finally saw off Bhambri who was at the peak of form from the past two weeks on the Sunshine Tour. With this second round finish at the Miami Masters, Bhambri should rise up to three places in the ATP rankings from his current World. No. 107 in the latest Live ATP Rankings. The Indian has had a terrific season after a slow start in January at the Tata Open Maharashtra in Pune. He made it to the Australian Open Main Draw and also reached the third round at Indian Wells. There he took the biggest scalp in the form of Lucas Pouille before going down to Sam Querry. Consecutive ATP Masters 1000 Main Draw appearances and to top it a Grand Slam appearance, Bhambri is proving his worth by making the most of his injury free season. With this steady rise, the India's top ranked has all the chances for a breakthrough year on The ATP World Tour.
