Asian silver-medalist Sumit Sangwan (91kg) and world silver-medalist Sarjubala Devi (51kg) will not return empty-handed from the ongoing maiden edition of the Indian Open, as the two romped to victory in the men and women categories on Monday, in New Delhi. Second seed Sumit outplayed Virender Kumar 5-0, while Sarjubala Devi along with Pinki Jangra emerged victorious in the 49kg category to reach the semis of the biggest prize money event to ever take place in boxing in the country. Top seed Sarjubala brushed away the challenge of Kenya's Christine Ongare 5-0, ensuring India her first of its many medals. Her no-nonsense approach from the word go, put Ongare on the backfoot which forced the Kenyan to attack on the counter. Sarjubala's brilliant back-peddles nullified Ongare's attempts to come back, as the Indian went on to register a dominating 5-0 win to set up a semi-final with Mongolian Jargalan Ochribat. Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra (51kg) also advanced to the medal-rounds as she won 5-0 in her fight against Jordan's Al-Mriheel. Bronze winner at the World Youth Championships Naman Tanwar (91kg), made a winning debut in the senior circuit as he ousted Jordan's Eishaish Hussein to progress to the semi-finals. Three-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa (60kg) measured his moves to come out on top against Bhutan's Dorji Wangdi. The Guwahati born boxer will be up against Uzbekistan's Sherbek Rakhmatulloev in the quarter-finals. Defending national champion Manish Kaushik(60kg) bettered the performance of Cuba's Rabi Armando Martinez to ensure his progress to the next round. Asian bronze-medallist, Amit Phangal also advanced to the quarter-finals without dropping a sweat as his Aghan rival Ramish Rahmani gave him a walkover. His next opponent will be Cameroonian Fotsala Simplice, who defeated Malaysian Mohammad Fuad Bin Redzuan. It was a nail-biting contest between K Shyam Kumar(49kg) and Neeraj Swami although the former registered a 5-0 scoreline in his favour. But, world youth champion Sachin Siwach(49kg) succumbed to a shock defeat to Thailands's Thani Narinram, in what has been an otherwise eventful day for Indian boxers.
