Haryana girls dominate at Youth National Boxing Championship

The 2nd Youth National Boxing Championship concluded with Haryana's women running away with all the spoils of victory. They won six out of six gold medals whereas among the men, the SSCB stable boxers took home nine out ten gold medals. Haryana's Joni missed out on a spot in the World Youth Championships (WYC) last year but that didn't seem to batter her confidence much. According to reports, She outplayed her opponent thoroughly and came out with a 5-0 victory and is hopeful of this win being a stepping stone for greater wins in the future. "I had missed out on the WYC as I lost in the finals last year. This year, I did not want a repeat and worked double as hard to emerge as the national champion. A bit of a surprise came in the 69-75 kg where Niharika Gonella, silver medallist at the Junior World Championships was defeated by Astha Pahwa of UP quite decisively. In the Men's category, Satender Singh was the only one of the SSCB Stables boys who stumbled and thus, failed to defend his crown against Daman and Diu's Ronak. Among the winners was also Khelo India Champion Bhavesh Kattimani who won gold in the 52 kg category. It started with S. Barun Singh beginning in style by winning 4-1 against Andhra boy R. Sai Kumar. This was followed by Youth Asian Boxing Championship bronze medalist Ankit defeating Haryana's Akshay Kumar. Akash, another bronze medalist from the same championship, outplayed Mohit, from Haryana 5-0 to emerge victorious while the last bout of the day left things a little bloody.
