Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap notched up a commanding win over Malaysia’s Daren Liew in a three-game thriller to progress to the quarter-final stage on Tuesday. The lone Indian to survive in Korea Open Super 500 after star shuttlers P V Sindhu and Saina Nehwal crashed out of the tournament following first-round exits, Kashyap edged the Malaysian 21-17, 11-21, 21-12 in a three-game duel.

Kashyap will now face Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the ongoing Korea Open, he had scripted a comfortable 21-16, 21-16 win over Lu Chia Hung of Chinese Taipei in a contest that lasted 42 minutes.

Kashyap is the only Indian remaining in the fray after his compatriots made early exits at the tournament. India’s leading female shuttlers – P V Sindhu and Saina Nehwal ended India’s hopes in the women’s singles category. The reigning World champion Sindhu succumbed to USA’s Beiwen Zhang by an uncomfortable 21-7, 22-24, 15-21, before bowing out of the Korea Open. London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal had to pull out owing to an injury. The Indian shuttle queen has had a tough year owing to injuries, struggling since her win at the Indonesia Open earlier this year. She saw a similar fate at the recently-concluded China Open Super 1000 Tournament where she made a first-round exit.

Recent World Champion bronze winner Sai Praneeth took on Danish stalwart and fifth seed, Anders Antonsen. However, owing to injury, Praneeth was forced to retire hurt, like Saina.

Besides, it was a dismal start for the doubles events for India as the pairs comprising B Sumeeth Reddy, Manu Attri, and Satwiksairaj Reddy, Chirag Shetty have been a pale shadow of their dominant selves at the tournament. While the duo of Attri and Reddy went down 21-16, 19-21, 21-18 against Chinese pair of Huang Kaixiang and Liu Cheng, Satwiksairaj and Chirag suffered a 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 defeat at the hands of Japan’s Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda.
