Martial arts is not popular in India and its proficiency is often related to countries in the east such as Korea and Japan. A lot many children have grown up stereotyping martial arts with what Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee enact on the movie screen and in the entertainment industry. Some have even aspired to do the same. However, the real journey to the top is one that very few have been able to achieve and be the best at.

Brought up as a fauji kid, Supriya Jatav was introduced to Karate at the age of 11. The motive behind this was to enhance her fitness and allow her to engage in some form of physical activity that would be beneficial for her in her daily life. Little did she know that her journey would lead her to the podium at the Commonwealth Karate Championships, Asian Karate Championships, and multiple National championships. The first major competitive accolade that she won was a bronze at the National Championships in 2011. Since then, she has continued to excel in her 55kg Kumite category where her dominance has been witnessed in the National Games with 4 Golds.

Supriya is a two-time consecutive Gold Medal winner at the Commonwealth Championships in 2015 and 2018 and is a Championship holder of the USA Karate Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. Her reputation and stellar performances have won her accolades from the state governments of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Multiple accolades have not dented the humility and vigour with which she carries herself. She dedicates a lot of her achievements and excellence in her Karate career to her Sensei (teacher) whom she looks up to with the utmost respect. Supriya Jatav has not only done the nation proud but has also ensured that she retains the graciousness, discipline, and ideals instilled in her through learning Karate. By dedicating her career and life to this martial art, Supriya Jatav has given the sporting fraternity in India a lot to think about when it comes to promoting and uplifting lesser-known competitive sports around the country.
