India's teenage batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal, who won the Player of the Tournament award for his batting superlatives at the U-19 Cricket World Cup has pushed The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to avert fee hike at its sporting arenas.

The story of cricketer Yashaswi Jaiswal, India’s top scorer in the under-19 World Cup has inspired many youngsters. A lad who sold panipuri for three years and slept in a tent at Azad Maidan is now known as India’s most promising cricketer. We have several such promising young players in Hyderabad in all fields. Reducing the user fee is our small contribution to sport,” said a GHMC official on the Indian Express.

GHMC which runs 521 playgrounds, 13 sports complexes, 14 indoor stadiums and 19 outdoor stadiums in the city, had doubled their user fees in September last year. For a few specific sports, the charges were even tripled.

The move is a great news for aspiring sports persons. The civic body has kept the hike in user fees on hold for now. All these playing arenas include nearly 37 different sports ranging from cricket to football, roller skating and table tennis and a lot more.

The rise in user fees had led to many parents withdrawing their children from playing sports due to financial constraints. A few public representatives requested the GHMC to reduce the user fee and from now on, the basic fee which was decided upon in 2012 will be levied.

In 2012, the fee was fixed at as Rs 50, which was increased to Rs 200 last year. In the past few years, the GHMC has converted many of its playgrounds to multi-purpose sports complexes where children can play.
