The junior girls basketball team of the country currently with the outstanding opportunity to represent India at the Junior NBA World Championships has achieved a rare feat. The u-14 team of girls have defeated their counterparts from Orlando in the tournament ongoing in Orlando itself. The tournament is a first of its kind competition aimed at improving global youth basketball. 16 regional champions are in play in each the girls and the boys division. 8 are American teams while 8 international teams are in the fray. The international representation includes regions of Europe, Asia Pacific, Canada and Mexico. With its tie up with Reliance Foundation in India, the NBA selected two teams from the Country- girls and boys to participate in the Junior World's. The competition will begin with round-robin play and continue with single-eliminations competition.  T
he winners of the US and international brackets will play in the World Champions games on August 13.
In their latest game, the Indian u14 girls team notched up a thrilling 46-37 victory against the team from South America. The Indian girls team comprises of players from Bengaluru who were the winners of the NBA regional championships. The team includes Vedaa Anand, Shreya Ashok, Nuha Asif Masood, Shreya Bose, Sunishka Kartik, Diya Kothari, Meghana Manjunatha, Moumita Mishra, Hamsa Nanjundaiah and Smriti Vemula. Prasanna Venkatesh Rajamanickam is the head coach while Sonal Nambiar is the assistant coach.
So far, Suniksha Karthik is the standout player of the Indian team topping the leaderboard in all aspects like points, rebounds and assists. With 11.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds and at least one assist in every game, the girl from Bengaluru has certainly grabbed eyeballs. Basketball is an up and coming sport in India with the girls squads doing particularly well on the international stages. 2017 saw both the senior women's team and their U16 counterparts win the FIBA 2nd Division Asia Championships with some dominant performances. The senior girls team are also gearing up to represent India at the upcoming Asian Games.
