In a recent decision taken by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the Gymnastics Federation of India will be recognised as a National Sports Federation.

A letter to the President of Gymnastics Federation of India contained the terms and conditions for the process to move ahead with. The Ministry has taken the necessary steps of recognising the election of the President, Sudhir Mittal and Treasurer, Kaushik Bidiwala.

There were also certain rules and regulations to be followed by the GFI in their capacity as a governing body. The changes to the constitution and an official copy of the necessary changes shall be sent to the Ministry as and when alterations are done at least two months in advance. The Sports Ministry also added that the necessary process of holding elections for the post as per the Model Election Guidelines will be adhered to. Given that it is now an official sporting body, any non-compliance to rules and regulations will be met with stringent action.

The ANI quoted the letter which said "It has been noticed that constitution, MoA of the GFI needs to be aligned with the provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 (Sports Code) Accordingly, the Federation is required to make categorical affirmation of the provisions of the Sports Code in its constitution withal 6 months so as to bring the same fully in line with the Sports Code,".

The Gymnastics Federation was de-recognised back in 2012 due to several internal disputes that marred the growth and progress of the sport. Thereafter it continued to remain aloof due to continuous non-compliance of governing rules and regulations which also caused serious issues with player representations in international competitions.

In 2020, the appeal was again rejected by the Sports Ministry along with three other sporting federations (Paralympic Committee, Rowing Federation and the School Games Federation).
