Goa set to host 2019 National Games in October

Goa is all set to host the 2019 National Games in October. The state government has urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to write-off their cash penalty of Rs. 10 crore, which was imposed on them for delaying the event. The state sports minister, Mr Manohar Ajgaonkar assured that there would be no further delays. He also informed that ten stadiums will be refurbished in the build-up to the National Games. Ajgaonkar stated that the existing facilities will be upgraded to the standards which are required for the games. Regarding the matter, he said, “The entire infrastructure would be ready by July or August so that the games can be held in October.”  This is going to be the 36th edition of the National Games. “We are trying to convince the IOA that imposing the fine may result in creating bitterness between the hosts [Goa] and the sports body [IOA],” added Ajgaonkar, during a meeting held to discuss the progress on infrastructural development ahead of the 2019 National Games, reported PTI. Also the deputy chief minister of Goa, this was the first meeting held by Ajgaonkar after the Election Commission lifted the model code of conduct enforced on March 10 for the recently concluded Lok Sabha Polls. He stressed on the fact that the games were not delayed purposely, there were several factors including the polls. Goa was supposed to stage the National Games from March 30 to April 14, but the state government reasoned its inability to host the event due to the general elections. Due to the withdrawal and postponing the event, the IOA fined the state governing body to pay a sum of Rs. 10 crore as a penalty. It was also previously stated by the IOA that the state would not be allowed to host the game until the fine was paid.
