Sports Ministry has decided to suspend Indian Golf Union (IGU) for failing to conduct elections despite regular warnings. The suspension comes after the union not abiding by the National development code of India and conducts elections despite given the fifth interim extension for a couple of years, reports TNN.

The sports ministry’s deadline for enforcing NSDCI ended on November 8.

The IGU got suspended as they have not conducted elections and haven’t got their governance structure approved through the Annual General Meeting. They were given a long rope to put their house in order and comply with National sports code but they failed,” a sports ministry source told TOI.

With the Olympics later this year, de-recognizing a federations does no good to the confidence of the players. While for many competitions the teams are picked by IGU, but for the Olympics the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does the selection.

Kavita Singh, president of women’s golf association of India, headed the five-member Golf Governance Committee to oversee the activities of IGU and participation of Indian Golfers in the Olympics. Their suggestions are still to be put forward.

This suspension also means that any de-recognized federation cannot conduct any national tournament under the name of India or Indian. Now this implies that European tour and Asia tour, co-sanctioned by Hero Indian Open and country’s lone Ladies European tour, Hero Women’s Indian Open is also in jeopardy.
