In the month of August, we saw Indian sportspersons in action at several events and tournaments throughout the globe.

Whether it was the BWF World Championships or the ISSF World Cups or even the World Junior Track Cycling Championships, Indians performed exceedingly well and bagged several accolades.

However, the month is over and a new month is upon us. September, very much like August, promises to be as exciting (if not more) for Indian sports fans all over the world.

Here we take a look at the major upcoming sports events and tournaments where the country’s top athletes will take part and fight for the top prizes.

AIBA World Boxing Championships - 7th to 21st September

The 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships, which will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, is scheduled to start from 7th September 2019 and will go on until 21st September. The tournament will see the best boxers competing for one of the most decorated titles in the field of boxing.

Leading India’s charge at the Championships will be star pugilist Amit Panghal (52 kg) who recently bagged the gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships. Accompanying him under the tricolour will be Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg), Manish Kaushik (63kg), Duryodhan Singh Negi (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Brijesh Yadav (81kg), Sanjeet (91kg), and Satish Kumar (+91kg).

Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship - 13th to 21st September 2019

The 2019 edition of the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championships, which will be held in Tehran, Iran, from 13 to 21 September 2019, will be the twentieth edition of the tournament. The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) along with Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation (IRIVF) organises the biennial international volleyball tournament is organised. 

India has been pooled in Pool C alongside Oman, China and Kazakhstan. The top eight teams will book their spots for the 2020 Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament.

World Wrestling Championships - 14th to 22nd September

The 2019 World Wrestling Championships is all set to begin from September 14, 2019 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. This year’s event will surely draw a lot of attention from fans as it will also serve as the first qualification event in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

As per the rules, the wrestlers who finish in the top-6 in each Olympic weight category at the World Championships will secure a berth at the Tokyo Games for their nations.

Star grapplers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are India’s biggest medal hopes in Nur-Sultan. Elsewhere, the likes of Sushil Kumar, Deepak Punia, Mausam Khatri, Pooja Dhanda, Divya Kakran are also expected to do well.

China Open - 17th to 22nd September 2019

The 2019 China Open will take place at Olympic Sports Center Xincheng Gymnasium in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China from 17 to 22 September 2019. It is a Super 1000 tournament and has a total prize of $1,000,000.

After PV Sindhu’s superb run at the BWF World Championships, the onus will be on her once again to provide the goods for the country. One has to keep an eye out for Sai Praneeth, Kidambi Srikanth as well as Saina Nehwal during the tounament.

World Weightlifting Championships - 18th to 27th September

The 2019 World Weightlifting Championships will kick off on 18th September, 2019 in Pattaya, Thailand.

As reported previously, the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) is sending a ten-member (comprising six men and four women weightlifters) weightlifting squad for the event.

Talented Mizoram teenager Jeremy Lalrinnunga, who bagged the gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympics, will make his World Championship debut at the tender age of 16. Apart from him, the men’s contingent also features the likes of Achinta Sheuli, Ajay Singh, Ragala Venkat Rahul, Vikas Thakur, and Pardeep Singh.

The women’s contingent is comprised of Jhilli Dalabehera, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Sneha Soren and Rakhi Halder. 2017 World Weightlifting Championship gold medallist Mirabai Chanu will be the country’s biggest hope at the event.

2019 World Athletics Championships - 27th September to 6th October

The 2019 edition of the IAAF World Athletics Championships will be the seventeenth edition of the big-ticket event. The meet is scheduled to be held from 27 September to 6 October 2019 at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

The Indian contingent is yet to be announced by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). However, we can expect the likes of Mohammad Anas, Jinson Johnson amongst others to perform well.

World Junior Badminton Championship - 30th September to 13th October 2019

The BWF World Junior U-19 Badminton Championship slated to be held at Kazan in Russia from September 30. The mixed team event will take place from September 30 to October 5, while the individual events will be held from October 7 to 13.
