Women’s Twenty-20 captain and Arjuna Awardee Harmanpreet Kaur has made the headlines, albeit for embarrassing reasons. According to reports, Kaur was recently removed from the position of DSP by the Punjab government after her graduation degree turned out to be fake.
The cricketer has since been demoted to the post of constable, as the post of DSP was beyond her educational qualifications.
Harmanpreet Kaur rose to fame suddenly, after she and her teammates led India to the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. Although the team would go on to lose the final against Australia, Harmanpreet and her teammates returned home as heroes.
Despite rising to monumental fame just this past year, Kaur has been playing since 2009. She has been one of the most consistent performers of the Indian women’s side and has also appeared for many international teams. Kaur has been awarded for her achievements as well. In 2017, she appeared in the top 10 rankings before taking home the Arjuna Award.
India’s T20 captain was also assigned the post of DSP which apparently she now has had to relinquish. This is a huge blow to women’s cricket in India as one of the most well-known players of the sport has been caught in controversy.

Meanwhile, the degree conferred upon her by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut is the one in question. However, the cricketer has stated that she too didn’t know that the degree was fake.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s father Harminder Singh has denied the allegations, however, stating that the Arjuna-awardee did not divulge in any illegal activity, “She did her schooling from Moga and was then selected in the Indian cricket team. She completed her remaining studies from Delhi and Meerut. She was provided a job by the Indian Railways on the basis of the same documents,” Harminder Singh spoke in a previous interview with News18.
In the meantime, a slightly lenient view is being taken towards Harmanpreet Kaur. She will not be facing any legal actions and will instead be demoted to the position of a constable; as the post matches her educational qualifications.
