Weightlifting has so far given each and every one of India's medal so far in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, but Squash is a discipline which has the potential to fetch a few medals! Although India's most decorated Squash player Saurav Ghoshal is eliminated from the meet, the others have enough potential to bring medal glory! The Indian's performed exceptionally well in the discipline on the first day of the mega event with Vikram Malhotra thrashing Zambia's Manda Chilambwe 3-0 in the Men's Singles round of 64. In the next round, he again outclassed Xavier Koenig with a similar scoreline to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals. He was scheduled to face England's Nick Matthew on Day 2, a match he ended up losing. Thus effectively ending the Mens Singles participation for India. Dipika Pallikal Karthik handed over a heavy defeat to Trinidad and Tobago's Charlotte Knaggs to enter the last 16 of the competition. She will face England's Alison Waters on Friday evening in Gold Coast. Another medal prospect, Joshna Chinappa blanked Papua New Guinea's Lynette Vai 3-0 on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games set up a match with local girl Tamika Saxby in the round of 16 later today.
Dipika Pallikal Karthik along with Joshna Chinappa won the Women's doubles title during the last edition of the Games back in 2014, in Glasgow. It will be interesting to see if they can manage to win medals in the individual events this time around. India has started the Commonwealth Games on a positive note and has so far secured two Gold medals, a Silver and a Bronze. With a lot of action is still in store on Day 2 of the meet, we are expecting a few more podium finishes before the end of the day! As to how far our squash singles champions will go, it remains to be seen. There is no dount that Dipika and Joshna are fantastic together as a pair. Here's hoping for the best in their respective singles clashes today.
