Weightlifters continue to make India proud as Satish Sivalingam secured the third Gold medal for India in the Men's 77 kg category at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. It is India's fifth medal all of them have been won by weightlifters. The athlete from Tamil Nadu recorded a total of 317 kg; 144 kg in snatch while 173 kg in clean and jerk. Sathish Sivalingam had also won the Gold in the same category four years back at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games! The event witnessed the cut-throat competition between Satish and Jack Oliver and the European managed to lift 145 kg in the snatch, 1 kg more than Sathish Sivalingam. But, the Indian reigned supreme after his clinical display in the clean and jerk with the lift of 173 kg! Meanwhile, Australia's Francois Etoundi settled for the Bronze with a total lift of 305 kg, 136 kg in snatch and 169 kg in clean and jerk. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Satish recorded a lift of 328 kg for the Gold medal, 149 kg in snatch and 179 kg in clean and jerk. The lift of 149 kg in the snatch is still the Commonwealth Games record. Satish qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics but finished 11th out of 14 competitors in the 77 g category. This win will definitely heal the wounds from last year a bit! With the weightlifters hogging the limelight so far, it is a time that athletes from the other disciplines also step up to the occasion. Indian Men's hockey team will face Pakistan on Day 3, while Squash player Joshna Chinnappa will also be in action in a quarterfinal tie. The Badminton Mixed team will also play its respective quarterfinal.
