Vivek Chikara defeated top seed Wang Sijun to claim men’s recurve gold at the Asian Para Archery Championships in Bangkok. With the final score of 7-1, it was a brilliant performance from the 29-year old to claim the podium finish at the Sports Authority of Thailand Archery Range. Chikara earlier beat Park Jun-Beom of South Korea 7-3 to set up the final with Wang.

Most of the Indian athletes present including Chikara were competing under a neutral flag due to the Archery Association of India (AAI) being suspended by World Archery in August, after the inability of the governing body to resolve the ongoing governance crisis. One of the main reasons as to why the Indian athletes decided to opt for a neutral flag is so that they are eligible for the summer Paralympic Games next year.

A total of 10 Paralympic sports are up for grabs which include five for men and five for women and they will be announced after the competition finishes. There are also two places available for the men’s and women’s recurve events, two each in compound men’s and women’s events and one spots each in the W1 men’s and women’s contests.

Chikara’s qualification for the 2020 Paralympics was secured after he finished joint ninth on the recurve men’s open section at the World Para Championships in s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, the duo of Jyoti Baliyan and Shyam Sunder Swami bagged the silver medal in the Compound Mixed Team Open event. Unfortunately, they lost in the final to their counterparts from China with the final score of 144-152.
