Burglars stole medals and valuables when they ransacked the home of 2nd India Open boxing gold medallist Bhagyabati Kachari in Guwahati. Kachari, currently preparing for the national championship in Delhi’s national camp, came to know only on Friday about the burglary in her Railways’ official quarter residence after neighbours alerted her of lights inside the room.

Kachari said from the national camp,

“My neighbours called me up yesterday saying that they saw some lights inside the house at night. When they (neighbours) entered from the backdoor…it was devastated. Everything was lost. They broke the door and took all my belongings and medals."

The thieves took all her medals, including six golds and even bronzes. She was last in her residence in August this year. During her absence, some of her friends stay here to look after the house. She has lodged a police complaint regarding the theft case.

She failed to qualify for the World Championships, scheduled to be held in October in Russia. The middleweight pugilist is now recovering from her back pain so that she can take part in the national championship scheduled to be held in late November and early December this year.

“I’m having little trouble in my back. I’m undergoing the scheduled training and the necessary exercise under the guidance of the physio. I’m hopeful of getting rid of the back pain in the next two months,” she added.

In July this year, she won a bronze at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament. In 2018, she won gold at the Ahmet Comert International Boxing Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey in the 81 kg category. Hailing from Assam’s Udalguri, the 27-year-old boxer is employed with the Indian Railways.
