If all goes well, we could see yet another event wherein sports stars of the country come together under one roof.

Newly elected president of The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, on Monday, revealed plans of felicitating Olympic medallists Abhinav Bindra, Mary Kom and PV Sindhu at the Eden Gardens for their enormous contribution to the development of sports in India.

As reported in a Bengali daily, Ganguly said, "We are planning to felicitate legendary Indian athletes who have made the country proud at the Olympics — Abhinav Bindra, PV Sindhu and Mary Kom — at the Eden Test," he said.

Eden Gardens is likely to host the country’s first-ever Day-Night pink ball Test during the upcoming series against Bangladesh, provided the neighbouring country’s cricket board agrees to the proposition. To mark the landmark occasion, the board is taking numerous steps including giving free tickets for students.

Felicitating Olympic heroes in such a stage is a great initiative taken by Ganguly and the BCCI. One must not forget what the likes of Bindra, Sindhu and Mary Kom have achieved for the country.

Bindra till date remains India’s only gold medallist at the Olympic Games while Sindhu is India’s first female Olympic silver medallist and first-ever Badminton World Champion. On the other hand, Mary Kom recently became the first boxer in the world (male or female) to win eight medals at the World Championships.

It’s a great initiative by the cricketing board of the country to honour India’s leading sportspersons. It will not only help in popularising the other sports in the country but also give some much-needed attention to these stars.
