India began their campaign at World Athletics Championships with hiccups as only MP Jabir produced a notable performance on Day 1 in Doha.

India's M P Jabir finished third with a timing of 49.62 seconds in Heat 1 of men's 400m Hurdles of IAAF World Championships and qualified for semifinals. Karsten Warholm of Norway finished the race in 49.27s to come first whereas Ireland's Thomas Warr crossed the finish line in 49.41s to rank second.

India's hope was also pitted upon 400m hurdler Dharun Ayyasamy, the national record holder, who tumbled after the last hurdle in his heat and failed to qualify for the semifinals. Ayyasamy clocked 50.55 as he lost precious time after hitting the final hurdle. He finished sixth in heat number five and 27th overall to miss out of the semifinals.

While everyone was eagerly looking forward to long jumper M Sreeshankar's performance, his campaign concluded on a disappointing note with him failing to reach the final after finishing 22nd in the qualification round with a below-par effort.

The 20-year-old Sreeshankar could produce the best jump of 7.62m from his three attempts in the qualification B. His effort was well below his season's best of 8.00m, which he had produced only last month in Patiala.

A total of 1,972 athletes from 208 countries and territories are competing in the championships.

With the bulk of the competition taking place at the fully air-conditioned Khalifa Stadium, most athletes will be shielded from the sizzling heat in Doha, where temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
