The magnitude of Indians’ love for sports, particularly cricket, is as incomprehensible as its feverish intensity. According to a recent survey by the digital travel company Booking.com, about 41% of the Indian population is reported to be willing to lose their jobs than not be able to watch a historic sporting final compared to the global average of 18%.

The report, which throws light on the optimistic narrative of Indian sports fans, seems no mere fluke. If you have ever been to a stadium, you will know why! Can you match it up with the efforts in the stands (if you know what I mean)? The noise, the buzz, the intensity of the rivalries! With dhols, whistles, and chants being played in the other corner, the commentators perched in their lofty cabins struggle most often to make themselves even heard!

The survey also suggested that 42% of Indian sports fans would cancel their honeymoon provided that it clashed with their team playing a big game, again compared to the global average of 19%. According to a report, the survey was carried out among 22,603 sports fans over a span of 18 years in 29 markets, including one thousand each from India, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, US, Uk, Russia, Indonesia, Colombia, and South Korea. The other 500 each were estimated each from New Zealand, Thailand, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Croatia, Taiwan, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden, Singapore, and Israel.

Ritu Mehrotra, Country Manager, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives at Booking.com stated:

With major international cricket and athletics tournaments coming up in Asia in 2020 and the excitement of the UEFA Euro 2020, next year will definitely be an unforgettable year for sports. With a mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, we want to ensure that one gets the most out of their trip by helping them find their perfect accommodation, no matter what the occasion. With this partnership with UEFA, we’re excited to help bring fans the best experience with booking their ideal accommodation as well as great things to do in each host city.

Furthermore, the report explained that as much as 82% of Indian sports fans said that they undertook one to five trips last year dictating their plans to travel internationally as well as domestically to catch their favourite player or team in action.

The study, however, stressed the importance of affordability and location for the fans, with 37% of them declaring that they would pay more for sports travel than their family trip.
