India are all set to take on reigning AFC Asian Cup champions Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Qatar in their second Group E game in Round 2 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Indian team, under new coach Igor Stimac, had a disappointing start to the campaign last week as they suffered a narrow loss against Oman at home. India started the match positively and took the lead in the first half but Oman fought back in the second and went on to score two late goals.

At the end, Sunil Chhetri and co. were left to rue their missed chances in the first half. India dominated the proceedings through the first 45 minutes, creating three clear-cut chances of scoring.

It was in the 24th minute of the game that Chhetri found the back of the net following a cleverly worked free-kick by Brandon Fernandes. Alas, that was the only opportunity which was converted.

Bheke

As India prepare to face Qatar, there are serious concerns that need to be addressed — the first and foremost being fitness. In the Oman match, the Men in Blue were visibly tired towards the latter stages. The defence was a let down, especially when the fatigue crept in, and leaked two goals that should not have been conceded. The shape of the backline had crumbled under pressure in the last 10 minutes.

Nevertheless, Stimac, with his experience will know better than to fix these issues as much as possible before taking on the formidable Qatar.

Predicted Lineups

Qatar (4-4-2): Saad Al Sheeb; Ró-Ró, Boualem Khoukhi, Tarek Salman, Abdelkarim Hassan; Ahmed Alaaeldin, Assim Madibo, Karim Boudiaf, Akram Afif; Almoez Ali, Yusuf Abdurisag

Match Prediction

Qatar 3-1 India

When Qatar was granted the hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup, there were questions raised about their football team’s capability of competing on the biggest stage. However, they managed to prove everyone wrong with their superb showing at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

In their first match of the qualifiers, Qatar, who are ranked 62 in the world, decimated Afghanistan 6-0, courtesy a brilliant hattrick by Almoez Ali.

No doubt, Tuesday’s match will prove to be the toughest challenge for the Indians. Qatar are arguably the best team in Asia but we can expect Chhetri and his men to punch above their weight and take the attack to the opposition. How well they can defend though remains the question.
