Avinash Sable scripted a new national record on Tuesday after clocking an impressive 8 minute 25.23 seconds to progress to the finals of the men’s 3000m steeplechase amid dramatic circumstances at the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

He bettered his earlier national record of 8:28:94 that he had set at the Federation Cup in the month of March. Avinash finished seventh in the first round heat number 3 and came 20th overall out of as many as 44 athletes in the event. He became involved in two incidents during the race that eventually slowed down the 25-year-old.

Avinash was obstructed by reigning junior world champion Takele Nigate of Ethiopia in an unfortunate series of events. Following an appeal from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Avinash was, however, awarded a qualification spot in the final. “We filed an appeal and we have got a favourable decision. So, Avinash will be in the final, he has been included among the finalists,” AFI Planning Commission Chairman Lait Bhanot told PTI.

Had there been no appeal, Sable could not have qualified for the finals of the men’s 3000m steeplechase. “Avinash included in finals after India’s successful appeal,” tweeted AFI. The two obstacles during the race were triggered by Nigate, once at the very start and another at the midway mark at a water jump barrier. Despite losing a crucial time, Avinash completed the race and made his way to the finals in a terrific run.

In April this year, Avinash finished second at Asian Championships where he clocked a timing of 8:30:19 only to bag a silver medal. Sable’s rise has been remarkable, considering that the Maharashtrian shifted from cross country to steeplechase in 2017.

In other athletics events of the day, Indian javelin thrower Annu Rani finished eighth in the women’s javelin throw final at the World Championships. This was the first time an Indian woman was competing in the finals of the javelin throw event and Annu did not disappoint, with the best attempt of 61.12m.
