In a shocking turn of events, a 20-year old volleyball player Showkat Ahmad Dar reportedly passed away while playing a volleyball match at Harnaag, Anantnagar in Kashmir which has sent his coach and fellow players in a state of disbelief following the unfortunate incident. Touted as the next big thing in Indian volleyball, the talented player was playing in a one-off match between a team of the best lot of players from Kashmir and a set of players from Punjab when the incident occurred. Fondly known as 'Jassi', the 20-year old is reported to have played one set before collapsing on the ground and was immediately rushed to the Janglat Mandi hospital in Anantnag where he was declared 'brought dead', owing to a case of cardiac arrest. Coach Muneer Aalam could not convince himself about the colossal loss and claimed that he was shattered on hearing the news, while also adding that he would have been a part of the match, if not for the strike that was imposed on that day. Abdul Majeed, Jammu & Kashmir State Sports Council volleyball coach also expressed his emotions and said, "I just got the news that Showkat passed away while playing the match. I cannot believe this has happened to such a big player," claiming that Dar had enough potential to achieve success at the national level. At 20 and in possession of three senior national championships and one youth cup, Showkat already had many feathers in his cap, notably one that had made him the only Kashmiri player, till date, to have been called for the Under-20 Indian team trials by the Volleyball Federation of India. Tragedies like these leave a deep mark when it comes to sports. It is indeed not just a loss for his family but a loss for the sporting fraternity as well. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family in this difficult time.
