Kerala will award 195 athletes government jobs under sports quota, according to a report in the Indian Express. The posting orders will be handed over to the sports persons by the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan at a function to be held at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram February 20.

The awardees have been shortlisted from the rank list for sports quota, which has been pending since 2010-14, when the UDF government was in office.

Every year, a total of 50 people are appointed under sports quota, based on which the rank lists of five years from 2010 to 2014 were considered. But most of the sports persons have found place in more than one rank list, so the final list for five years has only 195 names.

One of the major reasons why many people hesitate to take up

sports in India is due to the lack of job opportunities. In some of the sports,

even gold medals at the international level do not help you get a job, because

the state government pays no heed.

Last month, bronze medallist at the 2018 World Championship

and silver medallist at the 2019 Asian Championship, boxer Simranjit Kaur

had come out in the open asking people to help her with a job search, because

her state government was doing nothing about it. The print people came to Kaur’s

rescue and wrote about how search for a job. A lot of people shared the news

until sports minister Kiren Rijiju noticed the story and assured Kaur of a job

very soon.
