There was tragedy in store for India in the final athletics event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games - the 4*400 men's relay - with Amoj Jacob falling on the track. India were eliminated from the race despite having been at 3rd position at the end of the first 400-metre dash by Jeevan Suresh. Botswana, Bahamas and Jamaica won gold, silver and bronze respectively and India did not receive a rank. However, the race could have been a historic one - the men's 4*400m relay team has never won a CWG medal, though a bronze was won by the 4*100m team in 2010. [embed]https://twitter.com/afiindia/status/985055672164339712[/embed] It was therefore stunning to see Suresh keeping pace with the front of the pack after the first quarter of the race. Jacob took off impressively too, and another athletics medal seemed to be a possibility. Mummamed Anas, who produced a stunning run in the individual 400m race earlier this week, was scheduled to run the third leg. However, in what was a sudden jolt to all such hopes, Jacob collapsed on the track. It seemed like a bad fall and his teammates had to rush to him and support him off the tracks.

19-year-old Jacob is part of the young generation that has taken Indian track and field by storm in recent years. An official update on his injury is awaited, but the latest reports are that he pulled his hamstring. It is heartbreaking to see when an athlete pack in years of effort only to be defeated on the big stage by a moment where he picks up an injury. One hope Jacob and the rest of the relay team can rise from this disappointment.
