Commonwealth Games 2018: India wins Table Tennis Gold

The Indian Women produced a remarkable performance and surprising everyone defeated Singapore and won the Gold medal in the Table Tennis Team event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Sunday. This is the first medal from Table Tennis and is the 7^th Gold Medal for India at the Games. Manika Batra started the proceedings for India in the first singles for India against Tianwei Feng. Having won the first game 11-8, she lost the second and third 8-11 and 7-11. Batra never gave up, she fought hard to win back to back games 11-9 and 11-7 to seal the deal for India and take a 1-0 lead. Madhurika Patkar took charge of the court in the second singles against Mengyu Yu. The first game was a well fought one, Madhurika even got a chance to win the game but lost 13-11. Following that the Indian never came back in the game. Singapore's Mengyu took the next two games 11-2 and 11-6 to level the overall scores at 1-1. Although they slipped up a bit in the third losing 8-11, they made no mistake in winning the fourth 11-7 and helping India take a 2-1 lead! Next, Manika Batra was in action against Yihan Zhou in a match where a win for India would be enough for a Gold medal. Manika outclassed her opponent defeating her 3-0 with scores of 11-7, 11-4, and 11-7 to win the match and guide India to a top podium finish. With the Gold medal win, India is currently at the 4^th position in the medals tally with an accumulation of 12 medals. The collection includes 7 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal! Table Tennis was introduced to the Commonwealth Games in the year 2002 and since then, Singapore has successfully run away with gold every single time, that is, until today. Manika Batra, who is India's highest ranked Table Tennis star had a stellar performance throughout the race and halted Singapore's dominance in the sport.
